"a superb ensemble with impeccable musical taste" - The Saxophone Journal
News and Upcoming Performances:
Zzyzx Quartet will perform at Symphony Space in July
Dubbed “a superb ensemble with impeccable musical taste” by the Saxophone Journal, the Zzyzx Quartet will present its debut New York City recital alongside the release of its newest album, Intersections. Formed in 2007, Zzyzx has quickly gained high regard as a breakthrough chamber ensemble due to the group’s unique sound and thoughtful approach to repertoire and programming as well as the success of their first album released in 2010, Zzyzx Road. Zzyzx has performed throughout Europe, Asia, and across the continental US. Recent performances include a well-received recital at the World Saxophone Congress XVII in St. Andrews, Scotland, as well as a guest artist appearance at the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference in Tempe, AZ where the quartet performed a concerto in the opening gala concert.
Their repertoire features a variety of music – original works for saxophone quartet, new compositions including pieces by John Mackey and Jonathon Sokol recently commissioned by the quartet, as well as transcriptions of music which have never been performed by saxophone quartet previously. These seemingly disparate strands of music coalesce into an “intersection” of musical styles which hallmark the group’s artistry: that the intimacy of chamber music in any form or style should speak directly to the audience.
