In January, Zzyzx was in residence at Baylor University where the group taught masterclasses, coached quartets and gave a clinic on reeds. At the conclusion of the residency, ZQ performed as part of the Lyceum Concert Series, featuring music by David Maslanka, Jean-Francaix, J.S. Bach, Marc-Andres Hamelin and two premieres by David Canfield and Ben Hjertmann (winner of the Barlow Endowment). We had a wonderful time performing and working with the very talented students at Baylor and sincerely thank Prof. Michael Jacobson for the invitation!

Zzyzx gives Barlow Premier

January 18, 2016

On January 16th, Zzyzx gave the premier of  Awake, Alive, Amok, Ajar, Ben Hjertmann, winner of the Barlow Endowment Prize in Composition. Zzyzx served on the adjudication panel for the Barlow Endowment in the summer of 2014, along with PRISM Quartet and the United States Air Force Saxophone Quartet. Composer Ben Hjertman’s stunning new work is a wonderful addition to the saxophone repertoire, and is his third composition for saxophone quartet. In this video, Ben discusses the new piece in detail. Zzyzx looks forward to recording the piece later this summer, and to further performances in future tours.
